Neighbor's Dog Making Your Grass Looks Bad? Tips For Planting New Grass Seed

Blog

If your neighbors have a dog that constantly gets into your yard and uses your front lawn as a bathroom, this can make your lawn look patchy. One of the main things that can hurt your lawn is urine. This is because urine has alkaline pH and is high in nitrogen. Once the urine hits the grass it will burn the grass and cause it to turn yellow. You may notice small to large yellow spots in your entire yard. The only way to take care of this problem is to remove the dead grass and plant grass seed. Below is some more information about this so you can have a beautiful lawn again.

Purchase the Tools

Visit your local nursery and purchase some high-quality grass seed. You want the new grass to match the old. If you are not sure what kind of grass you have, take a sample of it with you and the nursery can help you. If your yard is a few acres or more, you can purchase wholesale grass seed to save a lot of money. You can generally find these wholesale companies online. These wholesale companies only sell high quality grass seed (click here to check it out). Purchase some fertilizer from the nursery and a shovel, if needed.

You should also consider purchasing and installing an underground sprinkler system. This will ensure your new grass seeds, as well as your current grass, stays moist when you have drought periods.

Get Your Lawn Ready

Take time to prepare your lawn about a week before you start planting the grass seeds. You can do this by removing any weeds and twigs from the soil. Use the shovel to remove the yellow grass, and then remove any stones you may find in the ground. If the soil is compacted, loosen it up with your shovel or a tiller if the area is large.

Add the fertilizer to the soil. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer on how to properly mix it. Water the area until the soil is moist. Put up a sign in the areas you prepared so people will not walk or drive over them.

Plant the Seeds

When the week is up, spread your grass seeds over the soil and then cover them with a thin layer of soil. This will prevent the seeds from blowing away due to wind or moving due to erosion. When you are finished, water the seeds lightly until the soil is moist.

Keep an eye on the areas where you plant the seeds to make sure they are not disturbed in any way. You never know if animals, such as squirrels, will walk over the seeds.

Turn on your sprinkler system each morning before the sun comes up if there is no rain in the forecast. The seeds need daily moisture until they have time to take root, which will be when they have grown a few inches. After this, most lawns require about an inch of water per week.

If you are not sure how to use the sprinkler, such as setting it for the right flow of water, contact a landscape contractor to help you. Do not mow over the grass until it is approximately three to four inches high. Finally, talk to your neighbor and see if they can't keep their dog out of your yard.
