Homesteading is becoming increasingly popular across the country. One aspect of homesteading is taking on livestock of some kind. If you are in the planning process of this, you will need to consider your fencing as it relates to the animal that it is keeping safe. One of the options is to build a fence from livestock panels. If this is your first time dealing with livestock panels, here are three key points to keep in mind.
Choosing the Panel
There are several types of livestock panels that are made with the animal in mind. For example, you will find horse panels as well as hog, goat, and cattle. Each one of these fencing panels has a different durability rating and thickness. They also have a different level of visibility. For example, horse panels are usually very visible and may even appear in colors such as red or green to help the horse see the panel clearly. Hog fencing, however, are primarily wire panels that may be electrified to keep the hog in. You will need to consider all of these aspects to choose the right livestock panels for your homestead plan.
Electrified or Traditional
Once you have narrowed down the type of livestock panels you want to use, you will need to decide if you want those panels electrified. The concern is not just for your livestock. You also need to keep children and other animals in mind. The electrified fence is used to help keep the livestock from trying to push through the fencing panels that are in place. If you don't have this issue with your livestock, then electrified fencing may be a costly endeavor that you won't utilize that often. Keep in mind, you can get an electrified fence that is on a timer and set for specific hours such as overnight hours.
Gate and Gate Security
You will need at least one livestock panel that is a gate panel. These panels can be secure enough on their own. However, you will want to add some security if livestock theft is an issue or if you will have people helping you such as ranch hands who may be coming in an out of the area during the day and night. You can place a key code device on the livestock panel gate to keep track of who is coming in and out and to keep security on livestock area.
These are only three of the points you need to keep in mind when you install livestock panels the first time. If you feel like the task is too much or too large to handle, contact your local fencing contractor. They can help with installation and can help you with options for livestock panel placement and gate placement. For more information, contact a company like Big Springs Equipment today.
